Like every authentic Tuscan hamlet, Villa Il Palagio preserves within its estate a precious place of worship: its private consecrated chapel, an intimate and timeless setting rich in history, spirituality, and tradition.
Dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve and Saint Joseph, the oratory dates back to the early 19th century and still remains in excellent condition today, bearing witness to centuries of devotion deeply rooted in the territory. Historical records trace the origins of the original Oratory of Santa Maria della Neve back to 1646, when it stood not far from the present-day villa.
The chapel is still consecrated and available for religious ceremonies, offering couples and guests a truly authentic and evocative atmosphere for intimate celebrations in the heart of Tuscany. According to tradition, the devotion to Madonna della Neve is connected to the origins of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
The legend tells that, during the 4th century under Pope Liberius, the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to a Roman noble couple, indicating the exact place where a church dedicated to her should be built. Miraculously, on the morning of August 5th, the Esquiline Hill in Rome was found covered in snow despite the summer heat, marking the site of the future basilica. From this ancient devotion emerged the cult of Madonna della Neve, which spread widely throughout Italy between the 15th and 18th centuries, leading to the creation of numerous churches and places of worship dedicated to her.
Today, the private chapel of Villa Il Palagio preserves the charm and spirituality of this centuries-old tradition, offering guests a unique setting where history, faith, and Tuscan beauty come together in perfect harmony.
